Happy New Year!

Today is the first day of the new year in the chinese lunar calendar. Chinese new year is a massive celebration – much more so than our western new year. Every year is the year of a different animal, 2013 being the year of the snake,Shé, 蛇.

It is said those born in the year of the snake have certain qualities including:
– wisdom
– great perception
– sympathy
– good temper
– highly intelligent
– intuitive
– generous
but on the other hand they are also thought to be:
– jealous
– suspicious
– fickle
– doubt others
– stubborn

Lucky numbers: 2, 9, 8
Colour: red
Flower: Orchid
Yin or Yang?: Yin

In addition to the animal appearing once every 12 years, there are 5 elements the rotate as well. These are earth, wood, fire, water and metal. The rotate within the animals so 2001 was the metal snake, and now in 2013 it has rotated to the water snake. Water snakes are also said to be particularly influential and insightful. They are very determined and successful due to their diligence. They are big softies when it comes to family and friends, but they certainly do not let their work partners see this side of them.

Famous snakes include:
Audrey Hepburn, Oprah Winfrey, Virginia Woolf, Ben Stiller, Martha Stewart, Abraham Lincoln, Robert Downey Jr., Tim Allen, Daniel Radcliffe (parsel tongue, this actually made me laugh so much XD ), J.F Kennedy, Orlando Bloom, Sarah Jessica Parker (would have been better had it been year of the horse), Taylor Swift.

Happy Chinese new year!
