February 21 – International Mother Language Day

Standard

Happy International Mother Language Day!

There are approximately 6500 languages spoken though out the world today. Although, around 2000 of them are spoken by less than 1000 people. International Mother Language Day is a day dedicated to keeping those languages, and thus the culture attached to them, alive. This years theme is “The Book”. So, if you speak a language different to the one commonly spoken where you live, find a text from that native language and read it. Preferable aloud and in a public place like a park, library, cafe, school etc. The point is to make people aware of other languages.

I’m very boring, with english being my first and only fluent language (I’m working my way towards Chinese, the most commonly spoken language in the world). For something very vaguely related, here is a music video about misinterpreting someone who is speaking a foreign language. What happens in the first scene is “shui jiao” depending on how it is pronounced, can mean either “dumplings” which is what the person is trying to say, or “sleep” which is what they end up saying.
