Happy Webcomic Day! Today is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day, and I’m celebrating it by doing what I seem to be doing an awful lot in replacement of actual, productive work…webcomics! Vast and varied, there is sure to be a webcomic online for every taste. I’m going to share with you some of my favourites:
1. XKCD http://www.xkcd.com/
The first webcomic I ever really became worryingly addicted to, XKCD is a “webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math and language”. It’s very quirky, but don’t worry if some of the jokes go over you head. It’s a combination of easy to relate to humour and niche math and computer programming jokes. For IT illiterates like myself, thankfully those ones are few and far between. Most of the strips are quirky, hilarious, and often strangely beautiful.
(I’d read them in order if I were you, there are run-on jokes)
2. Girls With Slingshots
I don’t like to pick favourites buuuuuut this one is pretty damn good. This may be due to the fact that my friend and myself can see a lot of the characteristics of the main character in me, which may or may not be a good thing considering Hazel is wonderfully cynical and sarcastic, with a talking scottish/irish cactus with a moustache. Together with her friend Jamie, the two go through life in the most hilarious way possible. You really need to read this one from the start (give the art work a chance, the artists style changes).
Ok, neither of those characters were Hazel or Jamie…I just really like that strip. Here’s one of the two of them from about a week ago.
3. Go Get A Roomie http://www.gogetaroomie.com/
This comic follows the somewhat scandalous adventures of Roomie, a crazy free-love hippie who has no permanent residence, rather travelling from “couch” to “couch”. She meets the constantly sleepy, Lillian, affectionately named Lazy Tyke, whose brilliantly creative yet secretive mind unintentionally begins to bring balance to Roomies life as Roomie slowly bring Lillian into hers. Oh, and it’s absolutely hilarious. A lot of the action takes place in a bar where it seems anything and everything does happen, and the characters are ridiculously and wonderful weird. It’s slightly NSFW out of context, but it’s not really.
It was difficult to find something interesting out of context…I promise you, give it a go from page one.
4. A Softer World http://www.asofterworld.com/
This one is not as upbeat as the others, but it is a wonderful comic. It’s what I might call…oddly inspirational and in many instances, surprisingly funny.
5. Sebastien Millon http://sebastienmillon.com
A new one I found out the existence of recently, Millon combines adorable drawings of rabbits, unicorns and baby ducks with adorableness and often incredible inappropriateness…and I love it.
Now, because I could write and post pictures about this into the early hours of next month, I’m going to stop at 5. But I’m going to just give you links to some other ones with no description…lucky dip!
Ok, I’m going to stop now. I have a serious problem.
