April 1 – Poetry and Creative Mind Day

Happy Poetry and Creative Mind Day! Poetry, if done right, is a wonderful, wonderful thing. One of (well, honestly my favourite) poets is George Watsky who, while being predominately a rapper is an excellent poet. Before you stop at the word rapper, his style is different – witty and clever and serious and funny at the same time, much like this poem. It is called “Tiny Glowing Screens Part 2” and it is beautiful. My favourite few lines are
“The reason there’s smog in Los Angeles is ‘cause if we could see the stars
If we could see the context of the universe in which we exist
And we could see how small each one of us is
Against the vastness of what we don’t know
No one would ever audition for a McDonalds commercial again”
If you enjoy that, you might also like these by George Watsky:
“S is for Lisp”
“Nothing Like the First Time”
“Letter to my 16 year old self”

Another favourite (and much lighter) poem of mine is Tim Minchins 9 Minute Beat Poem, Storm. Following the story of an awkward dinner encounter with a friend of a friend, Minchin pokes fun at ignorance in general in the most hilarious manner imaginable. My favourite line is
“I was like a rabbit suddenly trapped in the blinding headlights of vacuous crap”
Well worth the watch, this poem is also incredibly enjoyable to perform. I say suggest one person performing the inner thoughts of Tim Minchin and the other performing Storms lines.

What are your favourite poems?
