May 16 – Sea Monkey Day

Standard

I can’t even tell you how excited I was when I saw this day. Sea monkeys are definitely up near the top of the list of weird things people buy for children. Sea Monkeys are actually a type of brine shrimp, marketed as instant pets. Sea Monkeys work in their magical way because brine shrimp are able to lay encapsulated eggs called cysts, that can dry out for years without dying. Once added to salt water, they hatch and mature at a very fast rate, hence the magic of sea monkeys seeming to appear overnight. Their life is not short however – a Sea Monkey is supposed to live for about 2 years, which is a bit longer than most of my goldfish ever did. Below we have the frightening drawing of a sea monkey from Moose, and what it actually looks like, which is a lot more exciting.
