Happy Garfield the Cat Day! This popular comic was first published in U.S. newspapers in 1978 and quickly gained popularity. In 1980 the first published book of Garfield comics hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and by 1982 was published in 1000 newspapers. Fast-forward to 1993 and the strip is published in 2400 newspapers. Today the strip holds the Guinness World Record for the “The Most Widely Syndicated Comic Strip in the World”, appearing in roughly 2580 newspapers and the man behind the cat Jim Davis has an estimated net worth of $800 million. I think it’s fair to say Garfield has done remarkably well during its time. This isn’t surprising considering Garfield was originally designed to be a “good, marketable character.” Garfield avoids tackling social and political problems, and is really just a ray of sunshine on a gloomy Monday morning. Below is the very first Garfield comic strip, published on this day 35 years ago. Following it are strips from this date throughout years, showing the artistic style development.
